PIAA girls lacrosse playoffs: Wyomissing keeps perfect season intact by beating Quaker Valley

Different game, same result for the Spartans.

The unbeaten Wyomissing remained perfect with a first round win in the PIAA Class 2A playoffs, beating Quaker Valley 18-7 at Bob Wolfrum Field on Tuesday.

The Spartans won their first-ever District 3 Class 2A title last week with a 16-2 win over Hershey.

That high-scoring offense showed up again in their second consecutive appearance in the PIAA state playoffs.

“Taking it one game at a time, but having the opportunity to go there for a second time is really cool,” senior midfielder Audrey Hurleman said of hoping to make a deep run.

Wyomissing fell to Archbishop Carroll, who went on to win the championship, 15-6 in the quarterfinal round last season.

It took just over a minute for the Spartans (23-0) to get on the scoreboard, as Abby Noey scored off an assist from Hurleman.

The Quakers’ Lucy Royig responded with a goal of her own before the Spartans scored five straight to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

Goals came from Hurleman (2), Mackenzie Maggs, Emily Maturi, and Molly Macrina.

In the second quarter, the District 7 third-place finishers began to climb back into the game.

Royig scored her second goal off an assist from Meredith Fallgren.

That’s when the teams began trading goals back and forth. While the Spartans couldn’t pull away, the Quakers couldn’t close the gap.

Kacey Maggs scored her first two goals in the second quarter, with her second coming on a play where she was falling but still managed to get the ball in the net, helping the Spartans hold an 8-3 lead.

Royig scored her third goal after juking and spinning past several Spartans defenders with three minutes left in the half.

The Spartans led 8-4 at halftime in a game that still seemed could go either way.

However, Wyomissing ended the drama late into the third quarter.

“We wanted to come out with a W and set the standard,” Hurleman said of turning it up in the second half. “They were keeping it pretty close. But we were like, ‘We can do this,’ and we wanted to come out and make even more of a statement, which is really important.”

Macrina and Kacey Maggs each scored to extend the Spartans’ lead to 10–4 before Meredith Westwood responded with a goal for the Quakers.

That’s when the Spartans’ explosive offense, combined with their lockdown defense, led to six straight goals that bled into the fourth quarter.

“We just really need to stay composed, keep our patience, and we’ve been pretty patient,” Hurleman said on the keys to going farther in states than last season. “We’ve had some really tough games leading up. So, just being able to trust each other on and off the field and that we all know each other and have confidence in each other, is really important.”

With a 16–5 lead and less than five minutes remaining, the game was essentially over.

However, each team scored two late goals before the final whistle.

Macrina, Kacey Maggs, and Hurleman each scored four goals. Mackenzie Maggs and Noey each added two goals to advance.

The Spartans, who will play Saturday against the winner of Conneaut and Chartiers Valley with the time and place to be determined, played their final game of the season at Bob Wolfrum Field, the seniors’ last game there.

“It’s a little emotional, but not too sad because we came out with the win,” said Hurleman, a University of North Carolina commit. “Just being able to represent Wyomissing one last time and come away with a win is really special, and having the opportunity to play here means a lot.”
