PIAA tennis: Berks players wrap up historic season in Hershey this weekend

One of the finest seasons in Berks high school boys tennis history wraps up this weekend at the PIAA Tennis Championships at Hershey Racquet Club.

After winning both individual titles and a doubles crown at the District 3 tournament, Berks players begin their quest for more hardware Friday, starting at 8 a.m.

Leading the way for local players is Daniel Boone sophomore Chase Gerloff, the BCIAA player of the year, who has not lost a set all season, including a straight-sets win in the District 3 Class 3A championship match.

Along with Gerloff, Wyomissing freshman Parth Khachane also won a district singles title, in 2A, and the Conrad Weiser doubles team of Armaan Malik and Jio Garcia won the district 2A title.

Twin Valley senior Dylan Bonds will play in the 3A tourney, and Wyomissing’s doubles team of Truman Peters and Aaron Andrews, both seniors, will play in the 2A tournament.

Gerloff opens play in the 3A tourney at noon Friday against freshman Michael Goldovsky of Council Rock South, the fifth-place finisher in District 1.

Bonds, fourth in District 3, plays District 1 champion Ethan Sun, a sophomore, of Conestoga at noon.

The quarterfinals are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Khachane makes his debut in the PIAA tourney at 8 a.m. against senior John Rohrkaste of Montour, who was third in District 7.

The 2A quarterfinals are at 4 p.m. Friday.

The first round of the 2A doubles tourney starts at 10 a.m. with Malik and Garcia, both seniors, facing Indiana’s Gabe Nettleton and Michael Dubetsky, the third-place team from District 7.

Peters and Andrews, the runners-up in the District 3 tourney, open against District 11 champions Aveer Chadha and Harry Vicic of Moravian Academy.

The quarterfinals are at 4 p.m.

The tournament wraps up Saturday with semifinals in the morning and championship matches in the afternoon.

Along with individual success this season, Berks teams also had an outstanding year.

Conrad Weiser finished second in the state 2A tournament with Wyomissing, which won the District 3 title by beating the Scouts, advancing to the semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Lower Moreland.
