A police officer shot and killed a person who lunged at the officer with a knife during an incident early Monday in a vacant house in Shenandoah, state police at Frackville said.
The incident occurred at 12:38 a.m. Monday at 309 W. Coal St. The name of the deceased will be released pending notification of next of kin, police said.
Officials said the Shenandoah and Mahanoy borough police departments were dispatched to the address for a burglary in progress.
The property owner, who has video surveillance on the property, told police he had seen a person inside wearing a mask and carrying a large knife, and called 911.
As police were clearing the residence they found the person under a bed upstairs.
“As they were moving the bed the person lunged at the officer with the knife. Police fired their service weapon striking the person,” a news release reads.
Officers rendered aid and summon EMS, according to police.
The victim was pronounced dead by the county coroner’s office. The news release doesn’t say when or where.
The investigation continues.
