Law enforcement is still gathering evidence and searching for the people responsible for a shooting Saturday night at Lincoln University that left one dead and six injured, Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said.
Police do have one person in custody, Zecqueous Morgan-Thompson, 21, of Wilmington, Delaware, but he is charged only with carrying an unlicensed firearm and is in Chester County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail. De Barrena-Sarobe would not say whether the gun found on Morgan-Thompson was used in the shooting.
De Barrena-Sarobe said police are operating under a “strong belief” that there were multiple shooters, although they don’t believe a mass casualty event was the purpose of the shooting.
“We’re treating this as a shooting that broke out in the middle of homecoming weekend,” de Barrena-Sarobe said.
The shooting killed Jujuan Jeffers, 25, of , Delaware. He was shot in the head and died just after midnight, the DA said.
There are six other gunshot victims between the ages of 20 and 25. One is a current student at Lincoln University, one is an alumnus and the rest did not have a direct affiliation with the university.
All six are expected to survive, he said.
De Barrena-Sarobe said it was still a “large and very active” crime scene, and that the FBI is assisting with the case. K9 units were called in to help search, and police are conducting a grid search to make sure all evidence is recovered. Police are also doing ballistic testing, and de Barrena-Sarobe said that he would be “guessing wildly” if he tried to give an indication of the number of shots fired Saturday night.
One key to the investigation has been video evidence from the public, de Barrena-Sarobe said.
“These videos are going to help us track down the people that did this,” de Barrena-Sarobe said. “Stitching together videos is going to be a key part of this investigation.”
The DA said members of the public who have video of the incident should turn it over to the FBI.
There’s no clear indication of when the investigation will wrap up, and de Barrena-Sarobe said “we’re in this for the long haul.”
The University has suspended classes Monday. A moment of reflection, connection and healing will be held at noon on Monday in the Historic District of campus, between Vail and Amos Hall.
Gunshots broke out around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday outside of the International Cultural Center on campus, where tables were set up for a homecoming celebration. The campus was placed on lockdown until 1 a.m., although students told PennLive they were not notified of the lockdown by campus officials.
The Chester County DA’s office said more information will be provided as it becomes available.
