Positions open for Reading Conservation Corps spring program

Applications are being accepted for the Reading Conservation Corps spring program.

The mission of the program, formerly known as the Reading Climate Corps, is to steward the city’s natural and built environment.

A partnership of the Reading Public Works Department and Berks Nature, the corps is managed by the Student Conservation Association and supported by Connections Work.

The corps aims to introduce Reading residents age 18 through 24 to public service through hands-on conservation projects, such as invasive plant removal, tree planting, community garden maintenance, trail upkeep and litter abatement, said Bethany Ayers Fisher, city sustainability manager.

Participants also receive professional development opportunities to prepare them for careers in environmental stewardship.

The seasonal positions are full time, and corps members are paid for their work.

Participants also are eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award, which can be used to pay for educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs.

The program begins March 31.

The corps is funded by Reading and several federal agencies.

As the program continues to grow, additional funding is welcomed, Ayers Fisher said.

Applications are due by Feb. 28.
