Primary election 2025: Berks officials complete unofficial vote tally

Berks County election officials have completed their tally of results from the primary election.

Just 47,057 of the county’s 222,528 registered voters cast ballots in the May 20 primary for candidates they felt would best fill leadership roles, according to data from the Berks County Election Services Office. That’s a turnout rate of nearly 21%.

The vote totals now include all votes cast in-person on election day, through mail ballots and through provisional ballots. Of those, 33,164 were cast in-person, 13,766 were by mail and 122 were by provisional.

The party breakdown of the votes shows a larger total number of Republicans voted in the primary, outpacing Democrats 24,384 to 22,506.

However, Democrats saw a larger share of the party’s registered voters take part, slightly besting the Republican turnout percentage 21.7% to 20.8%.

The primary featured nominating contests for seats on the state appellate courts, local judicial positions, municipal boards and councils, school boards and some county row offices.

The current count can be found on the election services website.

The completion of the count triggers a five-day review period, ending June 5.

During the review period, candidates can challenge the results. That’s also the window during which write-in candidates must file petitions to have variations of their names count toward their vote totals.

County officials said there were more than 14,000 write-in votes cast in the primary.

The results will remain unofficial until the Berks County Election Board certifies them following the review period.
