Reading man arrested on sexual assault charges

A 28-year-old Reading man was taken into custody Thursday on charges he sexually assaulted a 51-year-old victim.

Angel Vasquez surrendered to Berks County detectives and was arraigned before District Judge David L. Yoch on charges of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault. Vasquez was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail.

According to Berks County detectives:

The victim reported to Shillington police on May 29 that they were sexually assaulted at a borough residence on May 26. As part of the investigation, the victim was interviewed and outlined the events leading up to the sexual assault.

A medical examination was performed on the victim at Reading Hospital following the assault. DNA evidence was discovered during the examination. In November, a DNA sample was obtained from Vasquez. An analysis conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police Crime Laboratory revealed that his DNA matched the DNA samples collected from the victim.

The charges were filed Thursday.
