Reading man fatally injured after wheel crashes through windshield

A Reading man was killed in a Lycoming County accident when a tire came loose from another vehicle and hit the windshield of the SUV in which he was traveling and struck him in the passenger seat, according to state police

Eric Diaz, 49, died Tuesday afternoon in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was transported following the crash.

Troopers at the Montoursville station gave this account:

On Monday about 1:30 p.m., a vehicle driven by Alex Hughes, 19, Douglassville, was traveling north on Route 15 in Armstrong Township when the driver’s side front wheel became separated from his car.

The wheel traveled along the concrete barriers on the divided highway and then bounced over the median into the southbound path of a vehicle driven by Jessica Stebbins, 38, Reading.

The wheel struck the passenger-side windshield and landed on Diaz, causing critical injuries.

Diaz initially was transported to UPMC Williamsport before being transferred to Geisinger.

Hughes was not injured. Stebbins suffered a minor injury, and a juvenile passenger in the rear suffered a moderate injury.

Further details about the extent of the other injuries and if those people were hospitalized were unavailable.
