Reading man jumps out of second-floor window in attempt to evade drug arrest

A Reading man attempted to avoid being arrested by police on drug charges Thursday by jumping out of a second-floor window of his home, police said.

Jorge Vargas-Pelliccia, 31, of the 300 block of Lackawanna Street was taken into custody and charged with three counts each of possessing a controlled substance, intending to deliver a controlled substance and possessing drug paraphernalia, and one count each of receiving stolen property and evading arrest.

He was arraigned Friday in front of District Judge Eric Taylor in Reading Central Court and placed in Berks County Prison in lieu of $200,000 bail.

According to police:

In June, state police were investigating ongoing narcotics trafficking and distribution throughout eastern Pennsylvania.

During that investigation, Vargas-Pelliccia was identified as a large-scale source of narcotics in Reading and his apartment was identified as a location where drugs were being stored.

A warrant to search his apartment was obtained.

Just before 2 p.m. Thursday, officials from state police and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency searched the apartment. Vargas-Pelliccia was the only one home at the time.

When authorities entered, Vargas-Pelliccia ran, ignoring commands to stop. He jumped out of the second-floor window, then ran before authorities chased and caught him.
