Reading man sentenced to 80 to 160 years in prison for shooting at law enforcement officers

A Reading man will spend 80 to 160 years in state prison for shooting at four law enforcement officers attempting to serve a search warrant on his Bingaman Street home in 2020.

Joshua Perez, 36, of the 500 block of Bingaman Street was sentenced Monday by Berks County President Judge M. Theresa Johnson on four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possessing drugs with an intent to deliver, conspiracy and related charges.

Perez was convicted by a jury during a trial in August.

According to investigators:

Berks County detectives and Reading police officers obtained a search warrant for Perez’s home as part of a drug investigation and attempted to serve it shortly before 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 21, 2020.

The officers announced their presence, then entered the apartment building.

As they were walking up the stairs between the second and third floors of the building, Perez fired four shots at them through a closed door to a third-floor bedroom. No one was struck.

Perez climbed out of a window onto the roof and fled. He was found on a neighboring rooftop about 15 minutes later and taken into custody.

Police were able to recover a loaded pistol and AR-15 rifle during their investigation.

Officials said investigators did not return fire because they could not see who had shot at them.
