Reading march to honor domestic violence victims

The 22nd annual Safe Berks Silent Witness March & Dedication will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Reading.

The group will gather at Safe Berks, 255 Chestnut St., then silently march to Reading Area Community College’s Miller Center for the Arts. A dedication ceremony is scheduled for noon, followed by lunch at 12:45.

The event is intended to honor and remember victims of domestic violence homicide in Berks County. It is held each October as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Marchers will carry red, life-size silhouettes that symbolize the victims. Each silhouette wears a shield that describes the tragedy of their untimely death.

Author appearance

Retired Reading Eagle editor Harry J. Deitz Jr. will discuss his latest book and sign copies at the Wyomissing Public Library on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Deitz’s fourth book is “Gentleman Jake: The success and tragedy of the Deadball Era’s greatest first baseman” tells the story of Jake Daubert, who escaped a life in the coal mines to become a two-time major league batting champion and most valuable player but died at 40 because of an undiagnosed genetic condition.

Daubert lived in Schuylkill County and was well-known in the Reading area 100 years ago. The book is available at sunburypress.com and on Amazon.

The event is free and open to the public. The library is located at 9 Reading Blvd. in Wyomissing.

Genealogy meeting

Berks County Genealogical Society will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the society library on the fourth floor of the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, 201 Washington St., Reading.  The speaker will be Les Rohrbach, president of the Berks County Association for Graveyard Preservation Society.  Doors open at 6 p.m.  Admission is free.

Peace discussion

“Being Peace” by Thich Nhat Hahn will be discussed at Soul Café on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at West Lawn United Methodist Church, 15 Woodside Ave. The topic is particularly relevant in light of renewed hostilities in Israel and Gaza.

Leading the discussion will be Dr. Harry L. Serio. The program is free and open to all.  For more information email hlserio@aol.com.

Fall Festival

Advent Lutheran Church, 16 Telford Ave., West Lawn, will hold a Fall Festival on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be hot dogs, popcorn, apple cider, lawn games and crafts..

Pretzel Bowl

The Rajah Shriners will be hosting their 72nd Shrine Pretzel Bowl Football game on Saturday at Albright College’s Gene L. Shirk Stadium, Reading, in cooperation with the celebration of Rajah Shrine’s 130th Anniversary.

The Albright vs. Widener game kicks off at noon, with pregame festivities at 11:40 a.m. There will be on-field presentations by area elected officials and an appearance by representatives of Shriners Hospitals for Children, which benefits from the proceeds of this and other Shriners activities.

Tickets will be available at the gate or in advance by calling the Rajah Shrine office at 610-916-9000. Ticket sales and donations for the Pretzel Bowl are tax-deductible as a charitable contribution.

Harvest Craft Fair

A Harvest Craft Fair is scheduled for Saturday at Muhlenberg High School. Raffles, food for purchase, 50 vendors, free entry. The event benefits the Muhlenberg Community Library.

History program

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley will present the educational program “My Neighbor’s Secret” on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E Main St., Ephrata.

Hear the story of a Lancaster resident who fought for his country in World War I then was interned in a Nazi detention camp, lost family members to the Holocaust and was forced to leave his homeland because of his faith.

Society meeting

The Leesport Area Historical Society will hold its monthly business meeting on Monday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. in Bethany EC Church, 308 Main St. Officers will be elected. Parking is available in the rear of the church.

Bingo fundraiser

The Kutztown Community Library will hold a bingo fundraiser on Sunday at Lyons Fire Company, 110 Park Ave. Advance tickets are available at Kutztown Community Library for $20, or tickets can be purchased for $25 at the door. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. Bingo starts at 2. Prizes include purses, gift cards, and merchandise from local vendors.

Farm fall program

A family-oriented fall program will take place Saturday at historic Dreibelbis Farm in Virginville.

The afternoon will begin at 2 p.m. with non-scary hayrides, a bonfire, free hot dogs & s’mores, pumpkin decorating, apple cider pressing and children’s activities. The fun at the bonfire continues through the event’s 6 p.m. closing time.

There is a $5 admission donation to benefit the historic farm. (children 2 and under are free). It covers all activities and refreshments; on-site parking is free. Because this event has such a large outdoors component, anything more than a chance of drizzle will lead to the event’s cancellation.

The 180+ acre farm has been owned by the Dreibelbis family for over 240 years. The program is presented by the Dreibelbis Farm Historical Society.

The Historic Dreibelbis Farm is located on Route 143 near Virginville.
