From the Friends of Hopewell Furnace
On the day (July 6) the Continental Congress requested George Washington proclaim the approved Declaration of Independence to his troops, the Friends of Hopewell Furnace cordially invite you to celebrate our nation’s 249th birthday. The Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County in cooperation with Amity Township, the Friends of Hopewell Furnace, and the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology John Shrader Chapter 21, will host an inspirational reading of the Declaration of Independence accompanied with music and traditional patriotic songs.
The program will be staged on the porch of the 18th-century White Horse Inn, 31 Old Philadelphia Pike, Douglassville, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 6. Admission to the event is free. To enjoy the program, people are encouraged to bring a blanket or a lawn chair.
The reading at the White Horse Inn also marks the day in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was first printed in a newspaper, specifically the Pennsylvania Evening Post, marking its public dissemination to a wide audience.
The program features Berks Opera Company’s Francine Black and Kacie Dieaer who will lead the audience in traditional patriotic songs. Christine Emmert, who will read from the Declaration, is a writer, actress, director, and educator. Her work has been read/performed throughout the USA as well as in Canada and the UK. She recently launched her novella, Dreaming of Storms, a year after the release of her film of the one-woman play about women of Hopewell through the Friends of Hopewell Furnace. Her prose has appeared on Amazon over the last 10 years.
