River Days events scheduled along the Schuylkill from Sept. 9 to Oct. 14

POTTSTOWN — The Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area is participating in a series of nature-inspired events across the region for River Days, from Sept. 9 to Oct. 14.

This year’s theme is “It’s Alive!”

Participants can learn about native plants and creatures reliant on watersheds while enjoying music, food, crafts, hands-on activities, hiking, biking, birding and rubber duck racing. More than 20 nature centers located in Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are hosting or collaborating on events that encourage visitors to learn more about the environment and all that’s alive, with the ultimate goal of making the Delaware watershed healthier, safer, and more livable.

Each center is a member of the Alliance for Watershed Education of the Delaware River, funded by the William Penn Foundation.

In celebration of River Days, the Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area, in partnership with Sly Fox Brewery, is hosting Ride for the River 2023 — a round-trip bike ride along the Schuylkill River Trail from Pottstown to Reading. Participants are invited to attend Sly Fox Can Jam, a free music festival at Sly Fox Brewery in Pottstown after the race. All participants will receive VIP parking and a food/beverage voucher for the event.

Registration is still open for the ride. The 34-mile and 16-mile rides are $50 and the 4-mile Family Fun Ride is $35 per adult. Two children may ride free with any paying adult who registers.

Cyclists will pedal an out and back loop of either 34, 16, or the family fun 4-mile routes from Riverfront Park.  35-mile participants will ride for Berks Nature; 15-mile riders will turn in Union Township; and families will make their loop by turning at Old Reading Pike.

The ride serves as a fundraiser for the Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area, which works with partners to build, improve and promote the Schuylkill River Trail. When complete, the trail will run 120 miles from Philadelphia to Frackville. Current projects for SRG include the opening of the Auburn Bridge, the relocation of a historic Bridge in St. Clair, and the completion of a feasibility study for trail creation and improvement in the City of Reading. Money raised through Ride for the River will support maintenance and improvements of the trail.

Sly Fox Brewery is a major partner of SRG. In addition to sponsoring events, the brewery produces the SRT Ale, an “ale for the trail” that benefits the Schuylkill River Trail. During the Can Jam Festival, Sly Fox representatives will present Heritage Area officials with a check from this year’s SRT Ale sales.

The rides begin at Riverfront Park in Pottstown. Register online at  https://www.bikereg.com/ride-for-the-river-srg .

Walk-up registration will be available the day of the race for all ride categories.
