Schuylkill County Conservancy has busy fall planned

The Schuylkill County Conservancy has the following activities coming up this fall.

The Big Sit Bird Count is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Locust Lake State Park. Join birders as they see how many birds they can identify in one day while sitting in a 17-foot diameter circle.  Results are entered into a database used by researchers to better understand bird migration.

Stop by the conservancy’s Frog Hollow booth at the Lake Front Festival on Sunday, Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park in Pine Grove. Get the latest update on Frog Hollow and learn about Schuylkill County Conservancy’s biggest trees.

The Pine Grove Autumn Stroll — Trick or Tree —  is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Union Canal Park. Stop by the conservancy booth to make a tree craft and pick up a tree seedling (while supply lasts).

A tree identification walk is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. at Frog Hollow, 1701 Schuylkill Mountain Road, Wayne Township. Enjoy a leisurely walk to learn about the trees in Frog Hollow. Note that the walk is on an uneven and unpaved path and accessible to the disabled. Wear sturdy, water-resistant shoes and outdoor attire.

There will be an Animal Habitat and Survival Hunt at Frog Hollow on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. Conservancy members Audrey and Lee Wells will lead a walk to look at animal habitat and survival needs. Note that the walk is on an uneven and unpaved path and accessible to the disabled. Wear sturdy, water-resistant shoes and outdoor attire.

“Animal Tracks — Who is There?” is scheduled for Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. at Frog Hollow. Join conservancy members Sue Reier and Barbara Ritzheimer to discover what animals live and play in Frog Hollow. Note that the walk is on an uneven and unpaved path and accessible to the disabled. Wear sturdy, water-resistant shoes and weather-appropriate attire.

A hike is scheduled for New Year’s Day at 10 a.m. at Frog Hollow. This is part of a nationwide initiative of First Day Hikes to encourage people to get outdoors.  Join conservancy members Jerry Bowman, Steve Hepler and Barbara Ritzheimer to see the “winter wonders” of Frog Hollow. Note that the walk is on an uneven and unpaved path and accessible to the disabled. Wear sturdy, water-resistant shoes. Dress in layers and avoid bulky coats.  Wear a hat and bring a water bottle with a warm drink.
