Schuylkill Haven event features comedy duets, creepy creations

The Walk In Art Center’s October Coffee House Cabaret and First Friday Artist Open House will crack you up and creep you out. The event is Oct. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Schuylkill Haven venue. Tickets are $10 each and include beer, wine, desserts and refreshments.

The “creep you out” portion of the evening is through the work of visiting artist Lawrence Sherman, and his macabre and slightly off-centered works. His “Once Upon a Midnight Dreary” exhibition features famous creepy guys like Edgar Allen Poe and Frankenstein, skulls and skeletons and ghouls and goblins.

The exhibition opens at the Oct. 4 event and runs through Nov. 8. It can also be viewed weekdays and on Saturdays.

The Coffee House Cabaret at 7 features Schuylkill Haven native and New York cabaret artist Corinna Sowers Adler and WIAC Executive Director Jacquie Engel singing comedy duets from Broadway and beyond. Seating for the music will begin at 6:40, and tickets are available at walkinartcenter.org or at the door.

Adler and Engel sang a few songs together back in June as part of a NYC Cabaret workshop performance for students and decided it might be fun to do a show together just themselves.

Songs in the show include classics like “Bosom Buddies” from “Mame,” “Class” from “Chicago” and “Sisters” from “White Christmas,” as well as tunes from more recent shows like “I Know Him So Well,” from “Chess,” “You Matter to Me” from “Waitress” and “For Good,” from “Wicked.”

“There are sure to be songs that people will sing along to,” quotes Adler. “You may even hear a classic or two from Carole King.”

Attendees can visit WIAC artists in their studios and grab some pre-Halloween treats. Parents are welcome to bring their children and do some trick or treating. The photography of Amber Fink and Gold Finch Photography will be on display.
