Schuylkill Haven Borough Council voted 4-3 on Feb. 5 to approve an ordinance that sets the stage for possible pay increases for council members and the mayor as a new state law makes such compensation increases possible.
If council were to approve pay increases, they would apply to people elected in the future.
Council members Diane Roeder, D. Edward Dress and John Williams voted against the measure, saying council members and the mayor should not be in office for the pay.
Under the new law, council members in boroughs having a population between 5,000 and 10,000 may receive compensation not to exceed $4,190 per year. The pay cap for mayors is $8,385. The population of Schuylkill Haven is 5,253.
In other business, the borough will be applying for a WalkWorks active transportation plan to improve conditions for people to walk and bike in Schuylkill Haven.
Council is allowing Schuylkill Hose to hold boot drives on April 19 and Sept. 13 on Parkway as fundraisers.
Borough Day was approved for Sept. 27.
Further discussion occurred regarding the borough’s 275th anniversary celebrations this year.
The committee planning the events is asking the borough to consider supporting funding. Currently the idea is to hold celebrations in conjunction with existing borough events like Borough Day
