Schuylkill Haven president’s resignation approved

Schuylkill Haven Borough Council voted June 18 to approve the resignation of former board President Jerry Bowman.

Bowman submitted his unofficial resignation in late May due to him moving out of the borough. He was honored for his almost two decades of service to the borough.

Vice President Tom Gordon has been acting president since Bowman left. No official replacement for Bowman has been named, and it was unclear when that may occur.

In other business, bids for improvements to the Willow Street Playground have been received. Borough officials must wait until later this month for approval, but borough secretary Kaitlyn Tinari called the start of the process exciting.

Council approved a hazard mitigation plan, which borough administrator Jessica Seiders says is a requirement of Schuylkill County’s process to adopt a countywide comprehensive and coordinated mitigation plan. Seiders says the borough has completed its plan and will continue to participate in any necessary disaster mitigation planning.

Council approved fire police assistance to Port Carbon for that borough’s July 4 parade.

During public comment, Judy Hauck of Cressona brought up the idea of doing a Veterans Day parade in Schuylkill Haven, Jillian Mullen of Tennis Avenue asked about progress with a neighboring apartment building’s stormwater issues, an issue Mullen has brought to the attention of council several times. William McGovern of Parkway mentioned leash laws for dogs, as he said he came across an incident at Bubeck Park with an unleashed dog.

Upcoming events include Fireworks at the island on July 12.

The July 2 council meeting was cancelled, keeping up with a yearly tradition in the borough to cancel the meeting closest to the Fourth of July. The next meeting thus will be July 16.
