Sewage treatment plant improvement, new internet service discussed in Schuylkill Haven

Schuylkill Haven Borough Council voted July 18 to approve the purchase of a transformer for the town wastewater treatment plant. Borough administrator Jessica Seiders said the plant’s transformer is in poor shape and needs replacement.

A 750 KVA transformer is being purchased using funds from the 2025 budget.  The total cost will be about $80,000 and is expected to be delivered in 42 to 44 weeks.

In other business, council approved Verizon right-of-way access to borough property to install equipment for an ongoing townwide Wi-Fi project.

Transmitting boxes are being erected on town poles and electricity added to bring the project to fruition. The boroughwide Wi-Fi service will be called WeLink.

There is no announced completion date for the project, but things appear to be moving on or close to schedule. The oiginal estimate for completion was sometime this year.

When complete, the service will bring high-speed internet to the borough to compete with existing services. Over the past year, Schuylkill Haven was approached as one of a select group to participate in the opportunity to provide wireless broadband in the borough.

When complete, the service will be broadcast to 4 square miles of the community with three levels of speeds.

WeLink CEO Luke Langford said this year that the service will compare very favorably with competing internet service providers in the area, with the highest, fastest tier of service costing $85. The least expensive option is $65.

WeLink primarily is available in larger cities. It was introduced to Schuylkill Haven because it is regarded as a forward-thinking community in  the company’s effort to expand to smaller towns, Langford said.
