South Schuylkill News year in review – August

August 4

Helping Harvest, which serves Schuylkill County, officially opened two new cold storage units. The units allow the food bank to greatly expand its ability to distribute perishable, healthy items to those in need.

School officials are struggling to find enough qualified candidates to fill open positions. In July, state education officials unveiled a plan they hope will turn the tide and help refill the shrinking pool of teachers.

Jonathan Eig, biography author of “Ali: A Life,” toured the former training camp of professional boxer and heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. Eig served as a consulting producer on the Ken Burns documentary “Muhammad Ali,” which aired on PBS in 2021.

About 30,000 attended the annual weeklong Schuylkill County Fair near Summit Station, which ran from Aug. 1 to 6.

A canal gate the Port Clinton Historical Commission is donating to Schuylkill Haven borough will soon have a permanent location.

Gov. Tom Wolf and Democratic lawmakers are trying to revive Wolf’s stalled proposal to send $2,000 checks to lower-income households in Pennsylvania, a move Republicans say will worsen inflation that already is the highest in more than four decades.

August 18

The Schuylkill Haven School District received a $235,000 state grant for improving school safety and security.

School supplies and backpacks have been donated to stuff 2,115 backpacks, the largest collection in the 20-year history of Schuylkill United Way’s Stuff the Bus program.

The Port Clinton-based Reading & Northern Railroad has added an updated passenger coach to its Lehigh Gorge trains in Jim Thorpe.

August 25

Schuylkill Haven Area School District’s sports performance center opened Aug. 16 with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The project sponsored by Lehigh Valley Health Network is the first of its kind in the area.

The Walk In Art Center, Schuylkill Haven, is ready to cut the ribbon on its new Art Education Center. The new center adds space for the growing pottery and clay department and enough room to hold two different classes at once.

At the Schuylkill Haven Borough Council meeting on Aug. 17 several residents voiced their concerns of eliminating parking on Becker Street. Making Becker Street one-way is being taken under consideration.
