Alvernia University has received a $3 million state grant to move forward on its newest CollegeTowne satellite campus in downtown Pottsville. The site at the Cressona Mall in North Manheim Township remains open but services there will transition to the Pottsville campus.

The Schuylkill Haven police department has been listening to the community to ease a congested intersection at Columbia and Berne streets. An officer will be on duty weekdays between 3 and 5 p.m. to manage traffic control.

The state awarded grants to 10 projects to improve parks in Schuylkill County. Grants were awarded through the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Conservation Community Partnerships Program.

January 13

At the Schuylkill Haven Borough Council meeting former council Vice President Jerry Bowman was elected president, with his predecessor Kurt Montz remaining on council as a regular member. Councilman Tom Gordon was elected vice president.

Severe blood supply shortages are occurring nationwide due to decreasing donations, and that emergency includes eastern Pennsylvania.

U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser visited The White Pear Formal Boutique in Schuylkill Haven. Meuser sits on the Small Business Committee and was a guest of the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce.

January 20

On Jan. 12 the Schuylkill Haven Area School Board decided to follow through on the plan to make masks optional in schools as of Jan. 17.

With the wastewater and sewage treatment plant contract with Miller Environmental expiring in May, Orwigsburg is exploring options for licensed operations for the plants and associated collection and distribution systems.

The Rajah Shrine circus, which was canceled lin 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been canceled for good.

January 27

A new Schuylkill Haven town clock will soon be a reality. The new clock has been delivered and is awaiting installation.

The Schuylkill Haven Area School District’s Sports Performance Center is expected to open this year. The climate controlled building will be used during school hours for physical education classes, for after school activities and will be open to the residents of the district at no charge on evenings and weekends.
