Spring Township man charged in crash that killed Penn State Berks student

A 20-year-old Spring Township man faces criminal charges as a result of a one-vehicle crash last week that killed a student at Penn State Berks.

Jen-Chieh Sung of the 2000 block of Tulpehocken Road has been charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle, exceeding the speed limit, driving without a license and other offences, according to a Spring Township Police Department news release.

Xuanyi Zhu, 20, of Portland, Ore., was pronounced dead at 4:10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the scene by Berks County Deputy Coroner Sarah Shivers.

Police said other occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened about 2 a.m. on Tulpehocken Road at Clary Drive, which is the entrance to the residence halls, just south of the Grings Mill Recreation Area entrance.

Zhu, who went by the first name of “Will,” was a passenger in the back seat of the vehicle, which was occupied by three other students, officials said. He wasn’t using a seat belt.

Sung was taken into custody without incident, police said, and was transported to the Central Processing Center.

Information on bail was not immediately available.

The Pennsylvania State University Police Department, state police, Wyomissing Police Department and the Berks County District Attorney’s Office assisted in the investigation.
