State police say they found driver in fatal pedestrian crash in eastern Berks

State police said they have found the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed an Earl Township man near his home and left him on the road where he was found Monday morning.

The vehicle also was found, and the driver, whose name wasn’t released, was interviewed, investigators said in a news release Tuesday. The vehicle is awaiting processing for evidence.

James Falasca-Carter, 33 was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Powder MIll Hollow Road one-tenth of a mile south of Hemlock Road, troopers said.

The victim’s body was discovered Monday about 8:15 a.m. by a passing motorist, but investigators determined he was struck by an SUV about 10 hours earlier, around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, troopers said.

Falasca-Carter lived in the 100 block of Laurel Road, about 2 miles from where the crash occurred.

Coincidentally, state police said they engaged in a nearly seven-hour standoff with a man who barricaded himself in the garage of a home in the same block as Falasca-Carter’s residence.

The suspect in the standoff was not the driver of the vehicle that struck Falasca-Carter, said Trooper David C. Beohm, public information officer for Reading-based Troop L.

The standoff, which involved a state police tactical team, was resolved about 7 p.m. Further details haven’t been released.

Troopers said the investigation into the pedestrian fatality is continuing.
