Performers gathered on the steps of the Reading Public Library Main Branch Saturday afternoon for this year’s Storytelling Through Dance community play, “The Storm.”
The program outside the building at Fifth and Franklin streets is a community engagement project of Barrio Alegría and the library. It combines the art of dance with the power of narrative to communicate stories, cultural heritage and social issues.
In their announcement of the event, organizers said this approach allows participants to express their experiences through movement, creating a powerful and engaging medium for storytelling.
Organizers stressed the following aspects of the performance::
• Cultural expression: Dance is used to preserve and share cultural traditions and stories, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse backgrounds within the community.
• Community engagement: Community members often get involved in the creative process. When they share their stories and contribute to the choreography, it makes the performances more relatable and impactful.
• Empowerment: Participants gain confidence, improve their self-expression and develop a sense of agency. It provides a platform for marginalized voices to be heard and valued.
• Educational workshops: Barrio Alegría offers workshops where participants learn about dance techniques, storytelling methods and how to combine the two to convey powerful messages.
• Performances: Public performances not only entertain but educate and inspire audiences by addressing relevant social issues and celebrating cultural diversity.
Reading-based Barrio Alegria’s stated mission is to utilize the arts to create transformations in individuals to help them transform their communities.
