Teen passenger seriously injured in Berks crash that killed driver

A 16-year-old girl from Mount Penn suffered major injuries in the one-vehicle crash last week that killed the driver on a rural road in Alsace Township, state police said.

Emergency crews needed to use hydraulic equipment to remove the girl from the back seat of the small SUV after it crashed along Skyline Drive west of Bingaman Road about 6:30 p.m. May 15, troopers from the Reading station said.

She was taken to Reading Hospital by ambulance.

Troopers withheld the girl’s name. Information on her medical condition could not be obtained from the hospital.

Seat belt information wasn’t available for the injured teen, they said.

According to troopers:

The driver, Zechariah S. Johnson, 19, of Mount Penn, was pronounced dead at the scene by Berks County Deputy Coroner Hannah Cutshaw.

A second passenger, Eric C. Colon Jr., 22, of Reading, was taken to Reading Hospital for what were described as minor injuries.

Investigators said the crash happened when Johnson lost control on a curve while traveling north on Skyline. The SUV went off the left side of the road and struck a tree.

Johnson, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle.

Major damage occurred to the front to the driver’s side of the SUV.
