Third person dies from injuries in fiery crash that shut down Pa. Turnpike I-476

A third person has died following a fiery crash over the weekend on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension in Montgomery County.

Cpl. Joe May, a state police spokesperson, said Monday the passenger of a car that was hit by a tanker trailer Saturday morning on Interstate 476 had died.

The tanker trailer hit the vehicle after it was slowing down near another vehicle that had stopped because of a flat tire just before 10:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes near mile marker 26 in Worcester Township.

The driver of the tanker trailer and the driver of the vehicle it hit died on scene from the fire in the vehicles, according to a state police news release. May did not have the condition of the driver who stopped to address the car’s flat tire.

The crash closed I-476 in that area for hours while emergency responders cleared and investigated the scene.

The corporal said authorities do not have confirmed identities of those killed in the crash because of the severity of the crash and the fire involved.
