Tractor-trailer cab crashes on Delaware Memorial Bridge, divers searching for driver

Authorities are searching for a truck after it drove off the Delaware Memorial Bridge into the water in New Castle, Delaware on Friday.

The search began shortly after 3:40 a.m., when the cab of a tractor trailer with no trailer attached “crashed right through the concrete wall,” after crossing three lanes of traffic and then onto a concrete pad, said James Salmon, a public information officer for the Delaware River and Bay Authority.

The truck was headed southbound over the span that connects Salem County, New Jersey with Delaware.

Crews began searching immediately in the water, Salmon said. It is unknown how many people were in the vehicle.

The left lane on the bridge is currently closed due to the accident. No other vehicles were impacted, according to a news release.

The accident remains under investigation.
