Twin Valley has many other big names and certainly plenty of other players physically larger than Hadley Munn.
But the diminutive sophomore stepped up Wednesday when Twin Valley needed her most to finish off a District 3 Class 2A field hockey semifinal victory.
Munn scored three goals, including two in the fourth quarter, to help Twin Valley defeat visiting Northern 5-1 and advance to the championship game to face Mechanicsburg at 3 p.m. Saturday at Central Dauphin’s Landis Field.
“It was pretty amazing,” Munn said. “It was fun to be with my team and celebrate and be able to to be a part of everything.”
Second-seeded Twin Valley (21-2) led 3-0 at halftime before struggling in the third quarter. Brynn Crouse scored for Northern with 1:03 left in the third quarter to help the third-seeded Polar Bears (18-3) get back in the game.
But Munn scored twice in the fourth quarter to put Twin Valley back in charge and complete a hat trick, sending Twin Valley to a district final for the first time since 2017.
“Hadley’s fierce,” said Twin Valley coach Kim Walsh. “She’s not afraid of anything. She’s aggressive. She doesn’t let the fact that she might not be quite as big or tall as somebody else intimidate her.”
Natali Foster, the two-time Berks Player of the Year, got the Raiders started 10 minutes into the game with her 59th goal of the season and 132nd of her career.
Emma Winther, one of three Twin Valley seniors committed to play field hockey at the Division I level, scored in the second quarter to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead.
In between, Munn scored her first goal late in the first quarter off an assist from Winther.
“She’s really stepped up in the big games and been able to finish in the circle for us,” Walsh said of Munn, who has 12 goals this season.
Goalie Maddie Stevens made eight saves to help Twin Valley turn back Northern’s third-quarter challenge.
“We got those three goals and at halftime we kind of got a little complacent,” Walsh said. “But we picked it back up in the fourth quarter.”
