Twin Valley, Exeter, Kutztown earn wins in District 3 softball playoffs

Erin Cromwell struck six batters over seven innings to lead No. 9 seed Twin Valley to a 5-4 win over eighth-seeded Lower Dauphin in the first round of the District 3 Class 5A softball playoffs on Monday at Hummelstown.

Ella Herbst tripled and knocked in two runs for the Raiders (15-6). Cromwell allowed four runs, only two of which were earned, and six hits in the win.

Karli Arbegast and Maggie Krall each doubled for Twin Valley. Six different Raiders recorded a hit.

Twin Valley led 3-2 heading into the seventh before both teams scored two runs. The Raiders will play at top-seeded Southwestern in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

In Class 6A, No. 6 seed Wilson fell to No. 11 seed Manheim Township 9-8 in eight innings on Monday in a first-round game at West Lawn. The Berks runners-up, the Bulldogs finish the season 19-5.

In Class 5A, No. 6 seed Exeter beat 11th-seeded New Oxford 9-4 on Monday in a first-round game at Reiffton. The Eagles (18-5) will host No. 14 seed Shippensburg in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

In Class 4A, No. 10 seed Fleetwood fell to seventh-seeded Middletown 6-5 on Monday in a first-round game at Middletown.

The Tigers let a 5-4 lead slip in the bottom of the seventh, as the Blue Raiders scored two runs to pick up the walk-off win. Pitcher Isabelle Santangelo took the loss, as she allowed six runs, three of which were earned, in six innings. Fleetwood did not record an out in the bottom of the seventh.

Catcher Morgan Koehler went 1-for-3 with a two-run triple, a run scored and a walk. The Tigers (10-10) finished with only three hits.

No. 9 seed Big Spring defeated No. 8 seed Berks Catholic 8-2 on Monday in a first-round game at Forino Sports Complex. The Saints finish the season 14-7.

Big Spring will play at top-seeded Hamburg (20-3), the Berks champion, in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

In Class 3A, No. 3 seed Kutztown picked up a big 12-2 win over sixth-seeded Lancaster Catholic on Monday in a quarterfinal at Kutztown Park.

The Cougars (16-6) will play at No. 2 seed Susquenita in the semifinals on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
