U.S. defeats South Africa in Olympic women’s field hockey

The United States ended its run in the women’s field hockey tournament at the Paris Olympics on a positive note, as the Eagles defeated South Africa 1-0 today in their final match of the tournament.

The United States took the lead it would keep for good in the 43rd minute.

The Eagles had a penalty corner shot deflect off South African keeper Anelle Lloyd and into Meredith Sholder’s direction. Sholder played high school field hockey at Emmaus but hails from Berks County.

The 25-year-old corralled the rebound near the left side of the net and slotted it into the goal.

The U.S. finished pool play 1-3-1 and did not qualify for the quarterfinals, which begin Monday. There are 12 teams in the tournament with six countries in a pool. The top four finishers in each pool advanced to the quarterfinals.

The U.S. field hockey team members from Berks are Ashley Hoffman (Twin Valley), Kelee Lepage (Twin Valley), Phia Gladieux (Oley Valley), Karlee Kisha (Hamburg) and Meredith Sholder, who played at Emmaus but hails from Berks County.
