Video of sons pains mothers of Schuylkill homicide victims

A 14-second video of Schuylkill County homicide victims Hunter Mock and Angelito Xavier Caraballo leaving Mock’s apartment in New Philadelphia the day they disappeared is painful for their families to watch.

Captured Oct. 8 at 10:35 p.m., the security video shows Mock, 18, and Caraballo, 16, walking away from the apartment. Mock returns when he realizes he forgot his phone.

The happy mood of the teens in the video makes it all the more difficult to comprehend what happened later, Tanya Evans, Angelito’s mother, said Wednesday.

“He was happy, excited to go, and they had no clue what they were going to face,” she said.

The last time she spoke to her son was at 8:30 p.m. that day when he stopped by their house to get Hot Pockets and Ramen Noodles.

“I told him that I loved him and be safe and stay out of trouble,” Evans said.

Kate Mock, Hunter’s mother, said she watched the video, which police also have, at least a million times.

“He was vibrating. He was excited,” she said.

“It kills me that somebody could do that,” she said of the teens’ brutal deaths.

Their bodies were found Oct. 10 in a wooded area off Ferndale Road near New Philadelphia, about 1 mile east of Route 209 in the area of “The Sanchez,” a water-filled former mining pit.

Mock suffered a gunshot wound to the head, while Caraballo had several puncture wounds and/or cut-type injuries that caused his death, forensics records show.

No one has been charged.

Reward increased

Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers on Wednesday said its $4,000 reward, announced Friday, for information leading to the arrest of the killers has been increased to $10,000.

Both mothers say they appreciate the reward being offered, but question if it will be effective.

“I think everybody is just scared. I think they are scared for their own life,” Evans said of those who know something.

“It scares me because they are still looking for evidence to close the case,” Mock said. “Hopefully, it will give someone the security to come forward.”

Crime Stoppers says it awards cash when information leads to an arrest, the solving of a crime/cold case or the location of a wanted person/fugitive or missing person.

Those with information can call state police at Frackville at 570-874-5300, or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers toll free at 800-4PA-TIPS (8477) or at p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=107.

The Crime Stoppers announcement says two suspects and two victims made plans to go “shooting” at approximately 10:30 p.m. Oct. 8 in a heavily wooded area called the Sanchez.

Two suspects are mentioned in the announcement. One returned to his vehicle and fled toward New Philadelphia, while the second fled through the woods, traversed through several bodies of water and arrived at a nearby residence seeking assistance.

District Attorney Michael A. O’Pake said Wednesday that state police are doing a tremendous job investigating and are working around the clock. He said any leads gleaned from the Crime Stoppers announcement would be welcomed.

Difficult Christmas

Christmas will obviously be much different for the Mock and Caraballo families this year, but they said they are coping as best they can.

Evans said she will still observe the holiday with her family, she has five other children, but not on Monday, because it would be too emotional.

Mock didn’t plan to celebrate until Hunter’s brother awoke Friday and said that he had a dream that Hunter told him he wants the family to be happy.

“Bro, don’t be sad. It’s Christmas. Get that tree up with Mom,” the son told her of his dream.

She waited until she was alone to cry. The house is now adorned with decorations and trees.

“Christmas has always been like a big thing for Hunter,” she said.

He would have celebrated his 19th birthday on Dec. 29.
