Walkway at St. Joseph’s University named for donor from Wyomissing

John R. Post is no stranger to having his name attached to things.

There is, of course, his Upper Tulpehocken Township business, Post Precision Castings, Inc.

But there’s also many others, named to honor the generous donations the Wyomissing man has made time and time again to a variety of schools and organizations.

There’s the John R. Post Executive Center at Caron Treatment Centers. There’s the John R. Post Center at Reading CollegeTowne and the John R. Post School of Engineering at Alvernia University. There’s the John R. Post Learning Center at Berks Catholic High School.

Post’s philanthropy doesn’t end at the borders of Berks. He has also made substantial donations to his alma mater, St. Joseph’s University. And as a result his name can been seen all around that campus.

There’s Post Hall, the school’s theater. There’s the Post Learning Commons, an addition to the library built about a decade ago.

And, soon, there will be Post Crossing.

St. Joseph’s officials have announced that Post, a 1960 graduate, has made yet another donation to the university. This time, it is to help build a tunnel that will connect the Philadelphia and Montgomery County halves of the school’s campus.

“I am honored and consider it a privilege to be part of this initiative, focused on building for the future of Saint Joseph’s University,” Post said. “It is always gratifying to be part of something new, and it is my hope that ‘Post Crossing’ will have a continued impact on building a vibrant campus life at St. Joe’s.”

The campus at St. Joseph’s is bisected by Route 1, a heavily-trafficked stretch of road also known as City Avenue. According to Joseph Kender Jr., senior vice president for university relations, that has caused dangerous challenges for students and staff.

“It’s not safe,” he said. “People have lost their lives trying to cross it, people have been injured.”

Post Crossing will help address those challenges.

It will be a wide, expansive tunnel that travels under Route 1, Kender said. It will serve both pedestrians on foot and cyclists.

Construction on the project is underway, with an expected completion date in April. Kender said that Post’s donations — the amount of which Post and the university are keeping confidential — is the lead funding source for the project.

“It’s a wonderful gift for a terrific project,” Kender said.
