Weekend events roundup: Busy festival season arrives as fall approaches

The Kennett Square Mushroom Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday in the Chester County town known as the Mushroom Capital of the World. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The event includes a chance to learn about mushroom growing, see cooking demonstrations and contests, enjoy food from vendors, check out mushroom-themed crafts and purchase fresh mushrooms. There will be eating competitions as well.

Children’s activities include a bounce house, bungy jumping, sand art and face painting and a visit by LEGO Masters Champions Krystle Star and Michelle Brooks. There will be a full lineup of musical performers both days

‘SpongeBob Musical’

SALT Performing Arts will stage “The SpongeBob Musical” as its first production in SALT 2.0’s upgraded theatre at 1645 Art School Road in Chester Springs. The show opens Friday night and runs through Sept. 21.

“SpongeBob” is based on the beloved animated series and won 12 Tony Awards including best musical.

Blues festival

Friends of Fleetwood Parks presents the Fleetwood Blues Festival Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Evergreen Club, 415 Hartz Road near Fleetwood, Berks County. The event features the Dave Mell Blues Band, the Blue Cadillacs and Eddie Bluestone. Tickets are $10 at the gate, free for 12 and under. Food and beverages will be available for sale. Hay Creek Festival

The Hay Creek Festival returns to Joanna Furnace in southern Berks County Friday through Sunday. The event near Morgantown shows attendees what a day in the 19th century Joanna Furnace Ironworks community would have looked like.

The festival runs each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is free on the festival grounds on Friday. Free shuttle buses will be  provided from an offsite parking area from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The exhibits and demonstrations include traditional early American crafts, a contemporary craft market, living history presentations and interpretations, vintage industrial revolution era working equipment, threshing demonstrations, a working sawmill, children’s hands-on activities, a traditional four-square kitchen herb garden, Civil War and World War II encampments, antique vehicles, steam engines and tractors, traditional folk music presentations and homemade festive foods.

Tara McRae

Tate McRae brings her Miss Possessive Tour to the Xfinity Mobile Arena (formerly Wells Fargo Center) in Philadelphia on Saturday at 7 p.m. Zara Larsson is the opening act.

McRae is a popular Canadian singer/songwriter with a strong background in dance.

Mann Music Center

It’s a busy weekend at the TD Pavilion at Philadelphia’s Mann Music Center.

• HAIM backed by Flowerovlove performs Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

HAIM is a multiplatinum-selling trio of sisters from Southern California with four Grammy nominations, becoming the first all-female rock group to be nominated for album of the year.

• The Crooner & The Cowboy with Reyna Tropical comes to the Mann Friday at 7.

Leon Bridges and Charley Crockett are bringing their distinct Texas voices on this tour. Bridges is a Grammy-winning R&B artist, and he is joined by musical maverick Crockett for a series of once-in-a-lifetime shows that celebrate their shared roots, longtime friendship and the musical heritage of Texas.

• Sting and Shaggy present One Fine Day on Saturday starting at 4 p.m.

In addition to rock legend Sting and reggae star Shaggy, the lineup includes O.A.R., The Original Wailers featuring Al Anderson, Marcia Griffiths, Big Freedia, Chance Emerson and Sophie Grey.

Chile Pepper Festival

The 29th annual Chile Pepper Festival returns to William Delong Memorial Park in Bowers, Berks County, on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Highlights include a jalapeno eating contest Saturday at 1 p.m. with cash prizes for the top three finishers. Sign up at noon at the stage. There will be music by the Chile Pepper Ramblers and vendors offering hot stuff for pepper fans.

Doylestown Arts Festival

The Doylestown Arts Festival returns for its 34th year on Saturday and Sunday. It features more than 160 artists, music on five stages, demonstrations and activities for all ages. Admission is free, and the event is held rain or shine.

Oktoberfest

The Bucks-Mont Oktoberfest is scheduled for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Vereinigung Erzgebirge Club, 130 Davisville Road, Warminster, Bucks County. There will be German music all day, rock music and night, soccer games and a keg-tapping ceremony. Learn more at veclub.org/oktoberfest/.

Honey Festival

The Philadelphia Honey Festival takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at  the Wyck Historic House, Garden and Farm, 6026 Germantown Ave.

Mountain Folk

The Mountain Folk Fest is coming to the Reading Liederkranz in Berks County on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., featuring mountain and folk music mentoring sessions, dance and music workshops and performances on the main stage. Highlights include Martha Spencers Wonderland Country Band and Dave Kline and The Mountain Folk Band, culminating in a grand finale jam inviting student participation. Gate opens at 11 a.m.

Narberth event

Narberth is holding a Music and Arts Festival from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the center of the Montgomery County town. It will feature musical performances, a market with dozens of artists and craftsmen and street food and beverages for sale.

Reading concerts

Progressive metal band Dream Theater comes to the Santander Performing Arts Center in Reading on Friday at 8 p.m.

Averly Morillo appears at the theater on Saturday at 7 with her Leña Nueva Tour, an event filled with music, worship, inspiration and a message of faith.

Bryn Mawr finale

Bryn Mawr Twilight Concerts wraps up its season Friday at 7 presenting Ron Sexsmith with The Silver Ages at the Gazebo in Bryn Mawr.

Sexsmith is an award-winning Canadian songwriter who has been active on the music scene for the past three decades. The Silver Ages choir is a group of indie rock musicians performing music that reaches into the great American songbook.
