VINEYARD, Calif. – The West Reading All-Stars built an early nine-point lead before Rodriguez High School rallied for a 56-55 victory Sunday in the Sheldon-Franklin Summer Jam at Sheldon High School.
Rodriguez, which is located in Fairfield, Calif., tied it with 11 seconds left, giving West Reading a chance to win the game in regulation. But the local all-stars turned it over, and Rodriguez made 1-of-2 free throws with 5.1 seconds left.
West Reading had one last chance, but a 3-point shot bounced off the rim as time expired in the Gold Bracket elimination game.
Rising Exeter senior Aidan Dauble scored 12 points for West Reading, Conrad Weiser grad Donovan Gingrich had 11 points, rising Wyomissing senior Danny Fleischood had nine and Gov. Mifflin grad Matt Koehler had eight.
West Reading finished 4-3 on its trip, which is part of the annual West Reading-Sacramento Basketball Cultural Exchange that began in 1972. Two of the local team’s losses came by one point.
