Wilson defeats Twin Valley in BCIAA girls basketball quarterfinal [updated]

Wilson put together a complete performance on Saturday night.

The third-seeded Bulldogs played efficient offense and stout defense to earn a 42-24 win over sixth-seeded Twin Valley in a BCIAA girls basketball quarterfinal at West Lawn.

“I thought they played hard and they got after it,” Wilson coach Chris Gallo said about his team. “We were scrappy tonight.”

The Bulldogs (16-5) dominated the first quarter, outscoring the Raiders 12-2. Wilson played feisty defense and effectively moved the ball to create open shots.

“Everybody is excited; it’s playoff basketball,” Gallo said about his team’s start. “They were ready to go.”

While Twin Valley (14-8) got its offense going in the second quarter, the Bulldogs remained in control and did not let the Raiders gain any momentum. Wilson led 22-10 at halftime.

The Bulldogs blew the game wide open in the third quarter, outscoring Twin Valley 12-6 to pull ahead 34-16. Wilson’s defense contested shots and forced several Raiders’ turnovers.

“I thought by the end of the third quarter we could get right back in the game,” Twin Valley coach Doug Myer said. “We had a few good opportunities early in that second half that just didn’t go in for us.”

The Raiders, who will continue their season in the District 3 playoffs, scored eight points in the fourth quarter but could not garner any momentum. The Bulldogs consumed the clock to keep the game well in-hand.

“We played our hearts out,” Myer said. “It’s not for lack of effort. It was just a tough game.”

Twin Valley senior Natali Foster led all scorers with 13 points. Outside of Foster, nine Raiders combined to score 11 points.

“We got to figure out a way to put more points on the board, and that’s my fault,” Myer said. “I’m not putting kids in the best opportunities to score.”

Junior Isis Dojan led Wilson with 12 points. She has scored in double figures in six of her last seven games.

“She went after it tonight,” Gallo said. “She got the loose balls and actually rebounded well.”

Senior Gia Borelli had 10 points for the Bulldogs. She distributed the ball effectively and helped facilitate Wilson’s offense.

“I thought Gia played really well,” Gallo said. “She’s my coach out on the floor.”

The Bulldogs will face Reading High in the Berks semifinals Tuesday at Santander Arena at 6 p.m. It is Wilson’s first trip to the semifinals since 2019.

“It feels good,” Dojan said. “We worked pretty hard for this.”
