Winter weather advisory continues, high winds warning added for PA, NJ [Updated]

The winter weather advisory posted Friday by the National Weather Service continues through 10 p.m. Saturday for Berks, Upper Bucks, western Montgomery and now western Chester counties to receive a total of 1 to 3 inches of snow, sleet and ice. Moderate to heavy rain will follow Saturday night.

A high winds watch was upgraded to a warning by the NWS Saturday afternoon and will be in effect 1 p.m. Sunday through Monday, Feb. 17, 6 p.m. for Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton and Philadelphia counties. Central and southern New Jersey were added to the warning.

Winds will be coming out of the west at 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 50 to 60 mph possible, the warning said.

“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” the upgraded alert stated. “Widespread power outages are expected. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

“Wet soils combined with the high winds could result in extensive tree damage,” the weather service said earlier Saturday.

The NWS advised remaining in the lower levels of a home during the windstorm, and avoiding windows while watching for falling debris and tree limbs.

Saturday night’s low will be around 34 and Sunday’s high will be near 55 degrees. The temperature then is forecast to dip into the high 20s Sunday night. Monday’s high is expected to be around 33.
