1 male dead, 1 wounded in Sunday night shooting in Reading

Two men were shot, one fatally, Sunday evening in almost the same location as a shooting three days earlier in Reading’s 6th Ward neighborhood.

Police and emergency medical crews were dispatched at 6 p.m. to West Elm and McKnight streets, a half-block east of the 200 block of Schuylkill Avenue. A male suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Responders declared the man dead.

Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams on Monday confirmed that one male homicide victim died. He said there was a second shooting victim who did not die.

Adams said the shooting occurred outside, but he did not have further details.

Reading police have not released any information.

The 300 block of McKnight Street, which intersects West Elm, was identified by Reading police on Friday as the scene of Thursday night’s shooting of a 19-year-old man. That man suffered what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The Sunday night shooting was the second over the weekend in the city involving multiple victims.

In the Millmont section Saturday afternoon, officials said, a Reading man shot his girlfriend in the head before turning the gun on himself.

Reading police were dispatched to the 100 block of Park Avenue. Officials said they found the victim, a 55-year-old woman, with a gunshot wound to the head.

Her boyfriend, a 40-year-old male, who was on the scene, was identified as the shooter, officials said. As officers were trying to take him into custody, he grabbed the firearm used in the shooting and shot himself in the head, they said.

The woman and the man were transported to Reading Hospital, where they remained in critical condition Monday morning, officials said.

Their names have not been released.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
