2 seriously injured when SUV collides with 8-ton roller on Route 183 in Berks [update]

Two people were seriously injured Friday morning when an SUV collided with an 8-ton commercial stone roller that was crossing Route 183 in Bern Township.

Route 183 was closed in both directions between the Route 222 interchange and West Leesport Road for about 45 minutes after the 10 a.m. crash in front of Fisher’s Rental, 2698 Bernville Road, Bern Township police said.

Investigators said an SUV driven by an 81-year-old woman was traveling south when it struck the roller that was crossing the road from the lot opposite the equipment-rental business.

The roller was operated by a 53-year-old man who is employed by Fisher’s, police said. He was thrown off the roller on impact.

The SUV sustained severe front-end damage and needed to be towed.

Both drivers were taken by ambulance to Reading Hospital. Police withheld their names, and information on their medical conditions could not be obtained from the hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.
