2 shots at wintry weather possible this week in Berks

A typical January dead-of-winter weather pattern has set up for Berks County and the mid-Atlantic with opportunities for snow, sleet and freezing rain possible.

AccuWeather is expecting an inch or 2 of snow late Wednesday into early Thursday for Berks, with the potential for a bigger storm late Friday into early Saturday after an arctic high pressure system invades the region.

AccuWeather said the key weather factor in determining if the weekend storm is major league will be the jet stream and how far west its southward dip will reach.

“Should the jet stream dip set up right along or just off the coast, then the storm would more likely be swept out to sea before heading very far north on the Atlantic seaboard early this weekend,” meteorologist Bernie Rayno explained.

The National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, N.J., which oversees Berks and most of the tri-state region, is expecting rain to turn to snow Wednesday night into Thursday, and possibly linger past daybreak.

As far as the later storm, the office said this: “Given the continuing model spread, forecast confidence remains fairly low.”

Expect mostly sunny skies with a high in the mid-30s today and the chance of snow showers or flurries, according to AccuWeather.

Wednesday should be warmer with a high near 40 and mostly cloudy skies. Then an approaching cold front is expected to trigger rain showers turning to snow overnight, AccuWeather said.

Mostly cloudy and colder conditions are likely Thursday with a high in the mid-30s, followed by the arctic incursion that night, according to AccuWeather.

Friday is expected to be a carbon copy of Jan. 11 and 15 with a high in the low 20s. The cold air would be in place and the table set for a major winter storm Saturday, or maybe just a very cold and cloudy day.

Beyond that, the 25th is showing potential for light snow, according to AccuWeather.
