The Berks County coroner’s office said a 20-year-old Reading man was killed when his car hydroplaned on a large puddle on Route 222 in Maidencreek Township and struck a tree following heavy rainfall last weekend.
Anthony Alonso-Hernandez was pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m. July 13 by Deputy Coroner Eric Graeff. He died of multiple injuries, and his death was ruled accidental, officials said.
Alonso-Hernandez was northbound on Allentown Pike, which is Route 222, just north of Dries Road shortly after 5 a.m. when he lost control after his car hit standing water in the road, investigators said.
It was determined that the puddle formed in the travel lane due to a large piece of plastic blocking a nearby storm drain, officials said.
A total of 1.27 inches of rain was recorded July 13 on instruments at nearby Reading Regional Airport in Bern Township.
Alonso-Hernandez was the 24th person to die this year as a result of motor vehicle crashes on Berks roads.
