2021 Top Stories: Passenger rail from Reading to Philadelphia closer to reality

Rumblings about passenger rail returning to Berks County may finally give way to rumblings of trains coming down the tracks in the not-too-distant future.

A passenger rail line connecting Reading to Philadelphia is something leaders have been discussing for years. In 2021, however, real momentum started to emerge for the service, and all those rumors and conversations and meetings that seemingly went nowhere might produce the desired outcome after all.

In February, a tri-county committee was created to explore the restoration of passenger rail service to the region, then in April, Amtrak unveiled a proposed train route from Philly to Reading.

But the passage of a new infrastructure bill by Congress in November would appear to potentially provide the funding for just such a project, which local officials were still openly exploring as of December.

While it remains unclear where exactly in Reading or Berks County a passenger rail line would wind up being placed, or just how much it could wind up costing, there’s near-universal agreement the service would help improve local communities and enhance the lives of residents.
