Correll Akings rushed for 95 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Wilson Bulldogs opened their high school football season Saturday with a 28-20 victory over Cheltenham at Upper Merion High School in King Prussia.
Akings, who carried the ball 16 times, scored on runs of 51 yards, in the second quarter, and 8 yards in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on Monty Greer’s 6-yard run.
Akings then made it 12-0 on his explosive run and Greer ran in the two-point conversion.
Cheltenham answered with two touchdowns to pull within 14-12.
Carson Giddians caught a 6-yard TD pass from Kendall Jackson and then Jackson scored from 1-yard out. Cheltenham did not covert either extra point attempt.
Wilson went up 21-12 when quarterback Madyx Gruber hit Mike Glover for a 37-yard scoring strike. Christo Hunsicker kicked the extra point.
Akings put the Bulldogs up 28-12 with his second touchdown run with 5:53 remaining in the game.
Cheltenham scored with 3:13 left on a Jackson to Giddians 49-yard pass.
Wilson rushed for 183 yards on 39 carries, with Gruber chipping in 52 on 14 carries and Greer 27 on 7 carries.
Gruber completed 15 of 21 passes for 172 yards and the touchdown pass to Glover.
Glover caught 3 passes for 43 yards and Cam Zullinger hauled in 6 passes for 74 yards.
Greer also had an interception, returning it 37 yards.
Up next for the Bulldogs is Plymouth-Whitemarsh on Friday at Wilson at 7 p.m.
