All-State softball team: Wilson’s Tatum Werley is player of the year in 6A

Wilson shortstop Tatum Werley capped an outstanding junior season in softball by being named the Class 6A Player of the Year by the The Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association Committee on Friday.

Werley hit .694 with  34 hits, 27 RBIs, seven doubles, three home runs, and a triple. She scored 27 runs.

Along with being the Player of the Year, Werley was named a first-teamer at shortstop.

She was one of three Berks athletes named to first teams. Hamburg pitcher Hailey Strunk was a 4A pick and Boyertown junior Kyra Neiswender was a 6A first-teamer as a utility player.

Strunk, a senior, pitched a complete game shutout in the Hawks’ 8-0 victory over Wilson in the BCIAA final.

The Jacksonville commit allowed just three hits and two walks in the complete-game shutout, her eighth shutout win of the season. She struck out four against Wilson’s league-leading offense.

This season, Strunk batted .428 with 30 hits, six doubles, 40 RBIs, and 22 runs scored.

As a starter in 2024 over 129.3 innings pitched, she had 19 wins (finished her career with 56) and a 1.24 ERA. She recorded 122 strikeouts in 2024 and finished her career with 387 strikeouts.

Two Kutztown players made the second team in Class 3A.

Junior Sadie Berger was picked an an outfielder and sophomore Felicia Oldt made the team as a utility player.

The team was selected from almost 600 nominations by high school coaches and media members statewide.

A first team and second team was then voted on and chosen for each of the six classifications, with the committee then picking the overall player of the year and overall pitcher of the year, along with player and pitcher of the year in each classification.

Seneca Valley pitcher Lexie Hames was voted the Overall Player of the Year and Neshannock’s Addy Frye was voted the Overall Pitcher of the Year.

Bella Nunn of North Penn was picked as the Pitcher of the Year in Class 6A.
