ARL issues Code Blue for dogs beginning Thursday at 11 p.m.

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County has announced a Code Blue will be in effect for Reading from 11 p.m. tonight, Feb. 24, until 3 a.m. Friday and then resuming at 11 p.m. Friday and continuing until 11 a.m. Saturday.

Falling temperatures, snow and ice are forecast.

Anyone who owns, possesses or has custody of a dog in the city must bring the animal inside their residence for the duration of the code, except for supervised and necessary bathroom breaks and exercise. The measure is part of the Reading City Code.

Noncompliance can result in the animal being removed by an animal control officer and impounded at the ARL in Cumru Township. Owners will have 48 hours after the code has been lifted to pick up their animal and will be subject to applicable boarding fees.

Any person witnessing an unsupervised dog left outside in the elements within the City of Reading should call the ARL at 610-373-8830.
