Autopsy completed on former Reading man killed by police in Schuylkill

An autopsy has been completed on a former Reading man shot and killed by police during a burglary investigation at a vacant home in Schuylkill County last week, but authorities said they won’t yet release results.

Coroner Dr. David J. Moylan III said Friday that Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner Albert T. Barnes attended the autopsy Thursday morning of Bryon D. Scheuring, 32, of Shenandoah, conducted by Dr. Wayne Ross, a forensic pathologist, at the Dauphin County Forensic Center, Harrisburg. There were representatives of the state police present, Moylan said.

Scheuring’s FaceBook page said he went to Reading High School.

Barnes reported the preliminary results of the autopsy, but Moylan declined to share those due to the continuing investigation by state police.

A routine toxicology test was conducted and specimens sent to a laboratory, the coroner said. Results are possible in two to three weeks, after which he’ll receive a written report.

Moylan also declined to elaborate on findings from a postmortem scan done at the county coroner’s office in New Philadelphia.

Trooper David Beohm, public information officer for Reading-based Troop L, said the investigation is ongoing.

According to investigators:

Shenandoah and Mahanoy City police were dispatched to 309 W. Coal St. at 12:38 a.m.  on Dec. 11 after the homeowner, through video surveillance, saw someone inside the home wearing a mask and carrying a large knife.

Police found Scheuring under a bed in an upstairs room and that he was given numerous verbal commands to surrender, but failed to do so. When police moved the bed, he lunged at them with a machete, and a Shenandoah officer shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shenandoah Mayor Andrew Szczyglak said the full-time officer involved, whom he declined to name, is on paid leave until the outcome of the investigation.
