Backyard shed in western Berks gutted by fire

A backyard shed was discovered on fire in the Spring Meadow subdivision in South Heidelberg Township and the flames spread to a shed on an adjoining property, fire officials said.

The property owners discovered the fire about 8:30 a.m. and called 9-1–1, Deputy Chief Nevin Klahr of Western Berks Fire Department said.

The first crew to arrive found a large volume of fire venting through the roof and back side of the 20-foot by 40-foot shed at 148 Butternut Court, he said. The development is on the south side of Route 422 just west of Sinking Spring.

Crews had to contend with gasoline and swimming pool-treatment chemicals that were stored in containers in the shed, he explained. They needed about 45 minutes and the use of fire-suppression foam to put out the fire.

The shed where the fire started was left standing but was damaged throughout, Klahr said. Some power lawn equipment was destroyed. The damage to the neighboring shed was limited to the outer surfaces, he said.

A state police fire marshal arrived to begin an investigation into the cause.
