The Animal Rescue League of Berks County will participate alongside 380+ shelters across 43 states to help pets find loving homes through reduced adoption fees of $70 or less, generously sponsored by BISSELL Pet Foundation from Thursday, May 1, to Thursday, May 15.
“Every time we host Empty the Shelters, it affirms the importance of this lifesaving program,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “During the two-week event in May, tens of thousands of pets of all kinds, many who’ve waited far too long, will find the loving homes they deserve. Empty the Shelters has created real momentum around adoption, helping our nation’s overcrowded shelters save more lives. We are proud to keep expanding this life-changing effort and grateful to everyone who makes it possible by adopting or donating.”
The ARL will participate in the event, offering a reduced adoption fee for all pets older than 6 months. All adopters must go through the ARL’s regular procedures to adopt, including completing an adoption profile and speaking with an adoption counselor to ensure that the pet they select is a good match for their home, family, and lifestyle.
Adopters are encouraged to bring their family members to meet their new pet at the time of adoption, and to bring their dogs from home to meet and greet with the potential new dog at the shelter. Dog adopters will also want to bring cash or a check for a $9.20 dog license, which is required at the time of adoption under PA law. Adopters will also want to bring a cat carrier (or they can purchase one from the ARL for $5) and a dog collar and leash (or they can purchase one from the ARL).
The ARL will be open on Monday and from Wednesday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and from Saturday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; no appointments are necessary. A virtual “line” is set up at www.berksarl.org/hello, where guests can check in when they arrive at the shelter. All guests will be able to check their place in line and be notified by text when it’s their turn to work with an adoption counselor.
Since its inception in 2016, Empty the Shelters has helped more than 323,000 pets find loving homes and is now the largest funded adoption event in the country. The program partners with more than 815 animal welfare organizations across 49 states and Canada.
