Berks Catholic boys, Wyomissing girls win first-round District 3 lacrosse games

Christian Cacchione had five goals and one assist to lead Berks Catholic to a 13-8 win over Schuylkill Valley in a first-round game of the District 3 Class 2A boys lacrosse tournament Tuesday at Forino Sports Complex.

The eighth-seeded Saints (11-8) will face top-seeded Susquehannock (17-1), which had a first-round bye, in a quarterfinal game Thursday at Susquehannock.

Berks Catholic outscored Schuylkill Valley 7-2 in the fourth quarter to break away from a 6-6 tie after three quarters.

Luke Hughes had three goals and one assist, Hayden Nowotarski two goals and one assist and Gabe Iswalt a goal and an assist for the Saints. Nate Hnatishion and Andrew Junikiewicz each had a goal.

Ben Eddinger led the ninth-seeded Panthers (9-6) with four goals. Kyle Moats had two goals and an assist and Caden Ryan two goals.

Schuylkill Valley was making its first appearance in districts.

New Oxford 14, Wyomissing 4: At New Oxford, the fifth-seeded Colonials (13-5) led 4-0 after a quarter and 7-3 at the half in the win over the 12th-seeded Spartans (8-9).

Chase Maggs had two goals and one assist and George Schwambach and Logan Hyde each had a goal for Wyomissing, which was in districts for the first time since 2013.

New Oxford will play at fourth-seeded Cocalico Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Class 3A boys

Carlisle 13, Gov. Mifflin 8: At Shillington, the eighth-seeded Mustangs (12-6) fell to the ninth-seeded Thundering Herd (14-3) in a first-round game.

Drew Mathieu led Gov. Mifflin with four goals and one assist. Trey Rock and Clay Reynolds each had two goals, and Caden Blandford had two assists for the Mustangs.

Carlisle will travel to top-seeded Manheim Township for a quarterfinal game Thursday.

Class 2A girls

Wyomissing 11, Eastern York 3: At Wyomissing, the sixth-seeded Spartans (13-6) advanced to the quarterfinals with the first-round win over the 11th-seeded Golden Knights (10-8).

Wyomissing will travel to third-seeded Susquehannock for a quarterfinal Wednesday at 7 p.m.
