When Berks Catholic and Fleetwood played last month in girls volleyball, the Saints had to rally from two sets down for the victory.
Not so Tuesday night.
This time, the Saints beat the Tigers 3-0 in a Berks Girls Volleyball League match at Wolf Gymnasium to clinch the Division II title.
Berks Catholic (10-0, 14-2) won by game scores of 25-13, 25-9 and 25-14.
“I think this time we really just played as a team,” Saints coach Alexis Leddy said. “We played loose, we played with confidence and my girls were just ready to play this time.”
When the two teams met on Sept. 19, the Tigers (8-3, 8-7) won the first two sets 25-22 and 29-27 before a three-match streak by the Saints.
“We’re not very focused right now, not a very disciplined volleyball team,” Tigers coach Keith Hallman said. “We’re just not peaking at the right moment. So we have a lot of work to do to get back to playing disciplined, focused volleyball.”
The Tigers kept things competitive in the first set Tuesday, trailing just 12-11. That’s when the Saints gained momentum and outscored them 13-2 to take the set.
The second set was all Berks Catholic as it got out to a 15-4 lead and its defense shined, allowing only nine points.
Up 2-0 in sets, the Saints would not allow any comeback, ending the third set with a 12-4 run.
Berks Catholic has four matches remaining in the regular season and it looks to remain hot going into the postseason.
“We feel good,” Leddy said of her team. “I think we have a really good connection as a team this year. I think our girls are friends on and off the court, which helps us, so we’re just hoping to come in with high hopes for playoffs and we’re just ready to go.”
The Tigers have lost back-to-back matches and close the regular season against Coatesville and Brandywine Heights.
“We’re gonna we’re going to get in the gym and focus on some of the areas we struggled in and continue to work,” Hallman said.
