Berks Catholic defeats Reading High in high school football

Christian Cacchione scored three touchdowns to lead Berks Catholic to a 42-12 win over Reading High on Friday night in a Berks Football League Section 1 game at Shirk Stadium.

Cacchione found the end zone multiple ways. He got the scoring started for the Saints with a 25-yard run in the first quarter. He also found the end zone as time expired in the first half on a 23-yard touchdown pass.

Cacchione’s third touchdown was the Saints’ only score of the second half. He returned a punt 55-yards for a TD, giving Berks Catholic a 42-0 lead, its largest of the game.

He finished with eight carries for 95 yards and one rushing touchdown and three receptions for 90 yards and a score.

The Saints got contributions from elsewhere in the backfield as well, with touchdowns from Josiah Johnson and Luke Hughes.

Johnson carried the ball six times for 80 yards and a touchdown — a 3-yard run in the second quarter. He also recorded an interception late in the second quarter that eventually led to a Cacchione touchdown.

Hughes totaled 34 rushing yards and a touchdown on six carries.

Berks Catholic quarterback Mitchell Gatz tossed two touchdowns for the Saints despite only playing in the first half. Gatz completed 5-of-10 passes for 120 yards and two scores. He threw touchdown passes to Cacchione and Trace Brown.

The Red Knights scored twice in the second half, and quarterback Daryonel Fontanez was involved in each score.

DeShawn Wilson scored on a 21-yard pass from Fontanez for the Red Knights’ first score. Wilson caught three passes for 65 yards and a score. He also carried the ball eight times for 23 yards.

Fontanez also ran for a score, finishing with 69 yards on five carries.

Joandy Nunez Morla led the Red Knights with nine carries for 139 yards, including a 51-yard run late in the game.

Jaxon Geddio recorded the Saints’ second interception of the night in the second half.
