Berks Catholic girls basketball hangs on for narrow win over Wilson [updated]

Berks Catholic relied on stout defense to remain undefeated in league play on Monday night.

The Saints mustered just enough offense and held Wilson to a season-low 32 points in a 35-32 win in a Berks Girls Basketball League Division I game at Wolf Gymnasium.

Berks Catholic (4-0 Berks I, 9-2) led 19-18 at halftime and remained in front throughout the second half. Wilson trailed by four points with 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback.

“We knocked down some key shots when we needed to,” Saints coach Bob Birmingham said. “We knocked down some key foul shots when we needed to in the fourth quarter.”

Berks Catholic went 7-for-10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. The Saints were 15-for-21 from the line in the game.

“They’re huge,” Birmingham said about the free throws. “When we needed them, I thought we shot pretty well.”

Berks Catholic was in front 35-29 before Bulldogs senior Amiyah Nguyen hit a 3-pointer at the final buzzer. Nguyen led all scorers with 11 points.

The Wilson defense disrupted the Saints throughout. Monday marked the first time this season that Berks Catholic scored fewer than 40 points in a league game.

“I thought we had a lot of unforced errors tonight that we usually don’t commit, but you got to give Wilson credit, they played very good defense.” Birmingham said. “They slowed us down using their trap and didn’t let us really get out and run the way we wanted to run.”

Junior Caraline Herb led the Saints with 10 points. Senior Caroline Reedy had nine. .

“They’re just so consistent for us,” Birmingham said about Herb and Reedy. “They don’t force things.”

Herb has scored in double figures in six games this season. She leads Berks Catholic with 20 3-pointers.

“Herb played really well,” Birmingham said. “She played great defensively as well.”
